Team Science

In the coming decades, space agencies such as NASA plan to send astronauts back to the moon and to Mars. These missions will require individuals from multiple cultural, professional, and demographic backgrounds to function together for extended periods of time in high-stress, life-or-death circumstances. Meanwhile on earth, the majority of work in many industries (e.g. health care, oil and gas, research) is performed by teams. How do groups of people work together to exchange knowledge, coordinate tasks, develop shared thoughts, and lead each other all while cooperating and avoiding conflicts? These same kinds of questions apply in many other contexts such as multiteam systems, or teams of teams which commonly function within and between organizations. Our on teams focuses on the core competencies of teams, how teams function within their broader systems, and identifying and targeting, often with interventions such as training, barriers and facilitators of sustained team effectiveness.
