Psychology BA Major Requirements

These are new requirements and apply only to students matriculating in Fall 2013 or thereafter. Students who matriculated prior to Fall 2013 should refer to the General Announcements of the year in which they matriculated at Rice or download the old major requirements PDF.

Students matriculating in 2013 or thereafter are required to complete 47 credit-hours in Psychology:

I. Complete the core courses (17 hours)

  • PSYC 101 - Introduction to Psychology (3 hours)
  • PSYC 202 - Introduction to Social Psychology (3 hours)
  • PSYC 203 - Introduction to Cognitive Psychology (3 hours)
  • PSYC 339 - Statistical Methods (4 hours)
  • PSYC 340 - Research Methods (4 hours)

No substitutions or transfer credits are allowed for PSYC 339 or PSYC 340.

II. Complete 30 hours of selected substance courses

Students are strongly encouraged to take all of their core courses before taking the upper-level courses that comprise their 30 hours of substance courses. Students should take PSYC 339 and PSYC 340 by the end of their sophomore year if possible.

For details on any of the above requirements, please visit the University's General Announcements. Please note that the above summarizes only the requirements for Rice students who matriculated in the current academic year. If you did not matriculate this year, these may not be your requirements; please consult the General Announcements archive for the year in which you matriculated at Rice.

Transfer of Credit
Once enrolled at Rice, approval is required prior to transferring courses from another institution. As a rule, only psychology classes taken at four-year colleges or universities can be transferred. Transfer of courses previously taken at a junior college or community college will depend on an evaluation of the syllabus and material covered.

  • You may not transfer psychology courses taken pass/fail or with a grade below C-.
  • Grades earned for transfer credit are not entered on your Rice transcript. Transferred courses have no effect on your Rice GPA.
  • You must take PSYC 339 and PSYC 340 at Rice.

Students may take up to 12 credit hours of Supervised Readings (PSYC 488) and Supervised Research (PSYC 485) toward the major, but only 3 of the 12 hours may be from PSYC 488.

Only courses designated as PSYC or specifically cross-listed in the course catalog are eligible for Psychology Department credit.

You may petition the Department of Psychology Undergraduate Committee for a waiver of any rule listed above over which the Department has control. For exceptions to University rules, you must petition the Committee on Examinations and Standing, not the Department.

If any advisor or committee grants you special permission to substitute a course, transfer a course to Rice University, or waive a written requirement, GET IT IN WRITING, whether in hard copy or in email.
