PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS

Application Deadline: January 15, 2017

Application available at https://psycgradapps.rice.edu

Acceptance Rate

Each year we receive applications from more people than can be admitted. Consequently, it is not always possible for us to admit every student who is qualified. Typically, we admit about 10 new students each year, out of approximately 130 applicants.

Faculty Research Match

Although the program allows considerable flexibility in the planning of courses of study, admission to the program is nonetheless contingent upon at least a rough match between applicant and faculty interests. Prospective applicants should therefore study faculty interests carefully.

Final selection decisions take into account letters of recommendation, grades, GRE scores, research experience and interests. There is no minimum entrance requirement in terms of either undergraduate GPA or GRE scores.

Admissions Criteria

Applicants who were accepted into the program recently had:

  • a mean GPA of 3.67
  • a mean Verbal GRE of 160 (range 148-170)
  • a mean Quantitative GRE of 155 (range 143-166)

The Psychology Department is interested in recruiting talented Hispanic, African-, Native-, and Asian-American students.

Campus Visit

Once a student is admitted into our program, we will sponsor a campus visit. During your time here, not only will you visit with faculty, but usually you’ll be hosted by current graduate students from whom you can learn more about graduate life and lifestyles in Houston.

Based on the close collegial relationships and collaborative environment between students and faculty, we strongly encourage all admitted students to visit Rice for a firsthand look at our department.
